JUST GO RIGHT!

During the recently concluded WAFBEC programme by Covenant Christian Center, I was at the help desk, watching my environment and also listening to the word going on. To my far right, I noticed this woman and her very cute baby. The baby was walking in front strutting adoringly, and the mother was walking behind, almost like they weren't together (but try hurting that child and see the wrath of a mother). An interesting thing happened, the mother noticed the boy going right, and she wanted to go left.

For about three minutes, we all watched from the help desk as this woman kept calling out to her child to go right with her, but then the left side looked more fun to the child because by this time, they had started praises and I think the crowd and the singing was appealing to him. Then as if telling the mum she had to live with it, he started going into the crowd on the right. By now, the mother had had enough, she went after him, and pulled him all the way to the tent on the right (while he was screaming and kicking), and it was the funniest thing we all saw that day.

Does this sound familiar in anyway to you? The times you so wanted to go in a particular direction, but God was leading you elsewhere. The times you wanted to go with the crowd and God was saying stand alone. The times you wanted to spend the money you saved for that nice dress and shoes and God said sow it into a ministry or pastor or someone’s life. I don’t know about you, but as I sat there, I couldn't help but relate to that picture as I thought of the times that God literally had to yank me out of a path of my own to a path He has for me, because no matter how much it looked  good, He knew better than me.

I am still learning to trust God with careless abandon when it comes to His will for my life especially when I do not understand, but I know that with each step of obedience, I will get there. So next time God yanks you and He will, do not fret. Sometimes He does this by allowing people walk out of your life, allowing men to fail and disappoint you. He doesn't cause them, but He allows them, and it teaches us to depend on Him, so that we do not get lost in the crowd, or drown in the ocean of life. Just go right and be on God's side no matter what.

NEVER TOO FAR GONE

Sade woke up to an empty room, the smell of alcohol still in the air and her head was banging so seriously it felt like it was literally going to burst. 'Well at least it was a great party I had' she thought to herself. Smiling at the thought of how many compliments she got over the dress she wore that accentuated her figure and the men drooling after her, she took a long look again at her living room realizing now that it wasn't the room that really was empty but her heart.

Everywhere felt so silent now and she could swear she was hearing her own heartbeat which had even swallowed up the sound of the bang in her head. She had been at this spot before and she hated it every time she was. That part where the party is over, the alcohol wears out, the men that were drooling over have slept with her, and she is back to the emptiness in her heart that she so desperately wants to fill.

She starts to get up, picking up items and begins the mechanical clean up as she had always done for close to a year now every Saturday morning. She smiles as she thinks back to the time when it used to be her friends and her doing the clean ups, but those days are gone, and those kind of people in her life were gone.  'They are boring anyway' she thought aloud. She began to laugh, slowly and stifled at first, until it gave way to what seemed a thunderous laughter which surprisingly gave way to uncontrollable tears.

She wanted to go back, it was all she ever wanted, but she didn't seem to know how to find her way back. Everything was a lie and she had lied to herself for too long that she was living 'the life'. She didn't want the drinking, the smoking, the sleeping around. She didn't want to go around carrying so much guilt and shame, not knowing what to do most of the time, living in fear. No, she most definitely didn't even want to be like everyone else, she wanted to be different in a good way, and be an example of the life people would hope to have. 'If I could just find my way back' she cried out.

The truth is that so many people have lost their way. Gotten mixed up with the wrong crowd, finding themselves doing things they were swore they could never do. And truth is that just like Sade, if we ever get to that point we realize that it really is never too late to go back. The fact that we even get to that point of realization at all is even a great start.  Yes, you can find your way back, just call out to the One who saved you in the first place. He is a Father. You really may have lost your way, but guess what? At that point when you cry out and cannot find the way, He comes to pick you up, carries you on His shoulders and brings you back home. Because the truth is you are never too far gone for Him to reach you.

Do these two things- Cry out to him now, go on to www.wafbec.org  and register. What better way to get back into the fold than opening up yourself for a 'restoration of faith' *winks*. See you there.

Oh and I am sorry I have been off for a while, I am back now and please need feedback on the new page outlook. Thanks. And an official Happy New Year to you all. Thank you for always reading.

OLD vs. YOUNG- Bridging the Gap 2

I promised I was going to write this, so here it is, and I really hope it is worth the wait. If you thought I would have lashed out at our parents and elderly folks without talking about the ills of ‘our’ own generation, you are so mistaken, and truth, I am glad I waited to get the energy right.
I will start by reiterating one of the quotes from the previous write-up on this- ‘those who criticize this generation have forgotten the people who raised them’. Quite a number of people agreed with this, I did too, but then again, it is from there I choose to help us see where we are going wrong and how we may end up raising a worse generation if we are not careful.
I was at a leadership summit today organized by Anabel Academy, and it was interesting and thought provoking as most of those programmes usually are, but Ben Bruce’s talk caught my interest the most as he focused more on the responsibilities of a youth and we as citizens of a nation. But let me focus on the responsibilities of the youth.
We can cry all we want about how the older generation have messed up our lives, country and world, but we need to step up to our own game and take the bulls by the horns if we really want to see any changes as we cry for. No one haven tasted power willingly relinquishes it to someone else, you want it, fight for it. If you doubt, ask Gadaffi, or Mubarak, and if they seem too far for your reach, ask some of our ex-military leaders.
Truth be told, most of us in this generation are looking for quick fixes, i often wonder if the fast paced technology has something to do with that. Ladies want to marry an Obama, and guys want to marry a Michelle, the wilder ones would go for Beyonce or Kim Kardashian. But no one is willing to do the kind of works that these people have done to get to where they are.
I sometimes hear some youths and I am ashamed for my fellow youths, and the older generation is not blind to the irresponsible lives some of these youths live. Yes, there are good eggs amongst us, but how many? We can keep complaining about the wrongs the older generation have caused, and how they refuse to hand over control and power to younger vibrant minds, but a man/woman that makes themselves stand out in a good way, will always be respected and sought after.  I personally had to break away from family strings to find my own niche. Everyday I take steps, make mistakes and get better for it. I know some others who had to do same, and they are more respected for it today by their folks than most others who stayed back.
Have we given them something to respect us for? Enough to trust us with leadership responsibilities? They know they have made mistakes, and I perceive they feel they are far too gone to make it right, but perhaps they hold on because they see how lightly we make of values, the compromises we make, even with them, the hypocrisies we display, and in this generation perhaps they see one worse than theirs? It isn't always about money. Learn, work, set your priorities right and strive for excellence in all you do.
They may have made decisions that brought us to the point we find ourselves, they may have failed us, but are we going to disentangle ourselves from this web so as to offer excellence to our generation? Or are we going to keep complaining and grinding our teeth? Some of us may have to seem ‘rude’ because of the unorthodox way we go about the change process, but show me a nation that has turned its tide, and I will show you intelligent radicalism. We need to bridge the gap, so that someday, when someone is writing as I am, it would be a success story of our own generation.

WHY DO LADIES LIKE ‘BAD BOYS’?

There has always been this debate about ladies liking bad boys and getting screwed over by them, yet more ladies tend to love the bad boys more. The ‘good’ boys are of the opinion that these ladies cannot eat their cakes and have them. The result? A lot of single, lonely and pained good boys. Some get to 'in the goodness of their hearts' pick up the pieces of the broken heart of the ladies that the bad boys get to break. Others are stuck in marriages to unsatisfied ladies who constantly seem bored, yet, some have managed to make it work with their women (this group is quite low)
So my question really is ‘why do ladies like these bad boys?’. Is it because they actually are better listeners? Or because they always know the right things to say to a lady per time even if they might be lies? Or perhaps for those of them who resort to domestic violence it is because they appear very macho doing so?
On the other hand, what are the good boys missing that the bad boys are doing to get the babes? I mean why go with some douche bag guy when there is a good guy that will never cheat on you, raise his hands to hit you, disrespect you and always be there for you? It shouldn't be so hard right?
I am beginning to get concerned because I see a lot of great guys and girls who are single and the complaint is always ‘there are no good guys, there are no good girls’. People coming out of bad relationships and swearing never to go back in for fear of being hurt again. Guys accusing that ladies don’t like good boys, ladies accusing that guys don’t like good girls, as such a lot of single good guys and good girls.
Perhaps if we get to answer this question, then I will know I am going into the business of match-making good guys to good girls. Partners not welcome!
Since it is a two way thing, forget the topic, I want to know both sides of the story. Would be glad to get your responses. Ladies and men, good and ‘bad’ let us hear your view on this. Why do ladies like bad guys? And vice versa.

OLD vs. YOUNG- Bridging the Gap

“All I wanted to be was a footballer, and you guys took that away from me….”. I listened in sadness as I watched this guy accuse his parents for being responsible for  what he had turned out to be and how frustrated his life was as a result.  As I left this family, I thought of how many other people have been trapped in a world they feel alien to as a result of decisions of their lives that have been made for them by the elderly authorities in their lives or their parents.

I have always been accused by my family for being too independent and wanting unnecessary freedom, and they keep saying my father would never have condoned that if he was alive, unknown to them, my father inculcated that life style into me and I also inherited most of it from my strong-headed mother. Unfortunately for me, they are not the only ones that think so, as our society is dependency-oriented and a lot of us have also been brought up with that mind-set, as such, a young guy or lady seen living alone when single at almost whatever age is seen as an anomaly instead of the normal thing. So I am constantly at that point where I seem unnecessarily strong-headed. Not to say I am a saint when it comes to that though, but I have seen a number of things to make me realize that the problem doesn’t lie totally with me.

I hate it when the only reason one can give me for wanting me to do something is just because ‘you are older than me and think you have seen life more than me’. Much as there are times this can save someone, let us not kid ourselves and say it works all the time. On the contrary, I have watched parents and elderly folks manipulate the younger generation with  this line often enough as well as ‘I am your mother/father, I know better’. Wrong! If you think someone is taking a wrong turn, take time to explain to them why you feel so, and if it just a hunch, then say so, not manipulate them with a gift that God has given you.

What is worse with some of the elderly is the fact that when they have made some of these blunders and it back fires, the failure to admit that they were wrong, thereby passing the wrong message of ‘acceptance of haven made a mistaken as a weakness’. I saw a mother once apologizing to her child for being wrong. I thought to myself, I wish all parents could be like that. The truth is much as they hold some measure of elderly/parental foresight, the challenges of today and the challenges of their time are a bit different and ,most of them have failed to catch up to know the best style of parenting to adopt. Fortunately for some parents, without much of their positive input, their kids have turned out right, yet they try to frustrate the efforts of these kids by wanting to hold on, controlling what is left of their lives almost when it is too late.

One time, a young lady told me of how she  told an aunt who had wanted to give her the sex education talk that she can keep it as she had learnt all there is to it the hard way. That might sound harsh, but it was the truth. How many more young girls and boys are out there learning these lessons when the wrong way? Their parents seems to forget that the moral standards of the world has dropped and exposure to these things are harder to control than before, yet they still try to adopt the same methods that their own parents used to them. How well is it working out? Some parents do not even have the moral strength to caution their children as they have become sign posts instead of leaders. Yet, they blame the child when it seems they turned out wrong.

I was talking once with a girl who loved to sleep around, drink and smoke. I asked her once how her dad would feel if he knew the life she was living. Her response was- “he should have asked me first how I felt watching him live his life the same way if not worse”.  To say your own child has failed, is to say that you as a parent have failed, because they didn’t bring themselves up.

I have a lot of respect for the elderly do not get me wrong, but maybe there are times when they too can miss it and they have to show humility by accepting that they have missed it, even if it means hearing it from a younger person. The age gap might bring some form of wisdom, but there are younger folks who have built character that some grey hair may never have had. Plus, if we go back to the Bible, same can be said of the friends of Job. The younger person held his peace long enough to give the elderly chance to spew out wisdom, when he couldn’t hold it anymore he let out- ….”There is a spirit in man and the inspiration of the Almighty gives him understanding”. How true this is.

I personally think that the controlling traits that the generation above min has portrayed and the failure to accept mistakes is part of the problems of this country too, unfortunately, the younger ones  have given them that power as much as they have held on to it. But all that can change. I love my parents and every elderly person in my life, the wisdom they sometimes portray I hope to give to my children too some day. But there is a big gap in what that generation has offered us and what they should have, and since they have failed to admit their errors, it is our responsibility to get it right and not make the same mistakes.

A friend on facebook once said- ‘Those who keep criticizing this generation have forgotten those who raised them”. How true this is. The greatest treasure a parent can leave their child is to groom them to be what God wants them to be, not what you as a parent want that child to be. The advise I gave to football crazy friend, ‘you can help other kids make the right choices, by becoming a coach if you can, and teach them the value of education as well’. That is my advice to anyone else who feels trapped in the same place. Pick up whatever pieces you can and take it back to God, because if your folks failed, He will never fail, for He alone can bridge that gap.
